6:03 PM: Hello fight fans and welcome to the LIVE blog for the PPV, remember to refresh the page every few minutes as I’ll be updating the fights round by round. Enjoy the coverage!
Devon Alexander(13-0, 8 KOs) vs. Demarcus “Chop Chop” Corley (31-7, 17 KOs)
(WBC Continental Americas junior welterweight title)
12-Rounds
Round 1: A relatively slow round as both guys feel each other otu. Chop Chop Corley lunges in with left crosses but Alexander is the sharper of the two landing the more accurate punches. Not a ton of action but Alexander takes the round based off the clearner punches.
10-9 Alexander
Round 2: A fun round to watch with Alexander the busier of the two. Apparently Alexander likes to hear his punches since he makes loud noises everytime he throws a punch. Corley tries to fight off the ropes but the quicker hands of Alexander win him the round.
20-18 Alexander
Round 3: Corley gets off first in the early part of the round. Corley, trying to use his superior fire-power digs to the body but Alexander steps on the gas and takes over the second part of the round. Alexander continues to fire off combinations while making those noises like he’s serving a tennis ball at Wimbledon. Good round for the youngster.
30-27 Alexander
Round 4: Devon is beginning to really give Chop Chop problems with his quick handed combos. Midway through the round, Corley gets stunned along the ropes but manages to weather the storm. Alexander is really starting to take over this fight. Alexander clearly wins this one.
40-36 Alexander
Round 5: Another good round for Alexander. Corley is dumbfounded on how to handle his opponent. As if needing to add insult to injury, Alexander lands a low blow that prompts a warning from the referee and a “what the hell was that?” look from Corley. Alexander takes it again.
50-45 Alexander
(Though a tad one sided, the crowd who is slowly starting to fill up the arena seem to be enjoying the scrap)
Round 6: More of the same from Alexander with fast, accurate combinations taking him to another winning round. Corley better start going for broke even though he’s still got six more rounds. Corley doesn’t seem to have the tools to beat this kid so he’s gotta start loading up on his punches.
60-54 Alexander
Round 7: Chop Chop seems to think he’s in the fight ’cause he’s content with punching in spurts. Alexander is all over him and isnt’ letting up. Good round for Devon Alexander.
70-63 Alexander
(Alexander has never been past the 7th round and it looks like tonight’s his night to make it a successful first)
Round 8: A closer round between the two with both guys trading body shots. Corley is starting to show the effects of the hard punches from Alexander. When Alexander lands to the head, Corley backs up and slows down. Alexander wins this one too.
80-72 Alexander
Round 9: Chop Chop looks out of his league tonight. Alexander is landing quick, hard shots and Corley has no answer for them. A clean sweep thus far.
90-81 Alexander
Round 10: I think Chop Chop should hang ‘em up. Alexander is having his way with him now and the fight doesn’t appear to have a chance to turn. Corley’s power has even diminished. Zero rounds for Corley.
100-90 Alexander
(Felix Trinidad is shown entering the arena to a chorus of cheers. Tito makes his way to the dressing room, hangs up his flag and begins to warm up. He’s not playing around tonight….but yes he’s all smiles.)
Round 11: Alexander takes the round…nuff said.
110-99 Alexander
(Roy Jones finally makes his way into the arena with his team. The crowd is not happy to see him as they boo him on his way in. Jones is either nervous or supremely focused and he finally trimmed that beard)
Round 12: Looks like Chop Chop will finally finish a round with his opponent only getting a 9 on the scorecard. Midway through an Alexander round, the youngster hits Corley low for the third time in the bout and is penalized a point. Won’t make a difference however thoug at least Alexander won’t win the fight with a perfect score. Alexander kinda wins the round but it’ll be a 9-9 round.
Final scorecard: 119-108 Alexander. Devon looks good against a veteran fighter who’s on the way out.
The final scorecards are read as: 116-111, 118-109, 118-109 all for the winner by unanimous decision, Devon Alexander!
——————————————–
(Felix Trinidad is shown again in the locker room sitting down watching the fights. Looks like he’ll be rocking blue trunks with a red, white and blue trim. Jones is finally changing into his gear; he’s smiling now, singing something from his album no doubt.)
Roman Karmazin (36-2, 23 KOs) vs. Alex Bunema (28-5, 14 KOs)
(WBA Inter-Continental junior middleweight title)
12-rounds
Round 1: A good opening round as both guys come out swinging in moderation. They both manage to land some decent combinations while working off the jab. I get the feeling this fight is gonna get hot and heavy in the middle rounds. The edge goes to Karmazin.
10-9 Karmazin
Round 2: Another close round and it seems that these will be tough to score. Karmazin is still trying to impose his jab against Bunema who is firing his own. Karmazin gets the nod.
20-18 Karmazin
Round 3: Bunema seems to have found a weapon in the straight right hand. On a few occasions, a short straight right managed to land flush to the chin of Karmazin. Bunema seeing his right work, tried leading with it a few times and also landed cleanly. Karmazin better watch out in the 4th. Bunema wins this one.
29-28 Karmazin
Round 4: A close round once again. Both Bunema and Karmazin are looking to go to the body and work the jab. Bunema didn’t capitalize by trying to land the right as frequently as he did in the 3rd so Karmazin had better luck in this one.
39-37 Karmazin
Round 5: Roman has a good round by avoiding those right hands and keeping Bunema on his heels with the jab. Ultimately though Bunema managed to land the harder blows and he takes this round.
48-47 Karmazin
(Video is shown of Papa Trinidad chosing his preferred set of gloves. Apparently jones wanted to use Grant gloves but Trinidad goes with Everlast.)
Round 6: Good hard fought round from both fighters. Karmazin is still using his jab and straight right hands while Bunema tries to work his way into the inside. Karmazin wins this one but barely.
58-56 Karmazin
(Max Kellerman interviews Jones about the gloves. He talks about wearing Grant gloves because they’ll match his outfit and he wants to look good for his people. LOL…Jones on the mic is funny.)
Round 7: Karmazin has found an effective left hook and wins the round with a couple of hard lefts. Bunema is starting to look off balance.
68-65 Karmazin
(Trinidad is asked in the locker room about not letting Jones use Grant gloves even though Jones let it slide yesterday that Trinidad was a tad over the weight limit. Trinidad explains that it was agreed upon that they’d use Everlast gloves and it was as simple as that)
Round 8: Karmazin has begun to take over this fight. This was probably the clearest and easiest round to score. Roman is landing his jab, left hook and body shots while Bunema is continuously backing away.
78-74 Karmazin
(HBO’s Harold Lederman inexplicably gives the round to Bunema. What?!?)
Round 9: Good round with action from both fighters. Bunema stuns Karmazin early in the round with a big set of right hands forcing him to clinch. Karmazin comes back in the latter half of the round with some punishing left hooks that buckles Bunema but still loses the round.
87-84 Karmazin
Round 10: Bunema brings the pain and rops Karmazin early on in the round with a crisp left hook. Karmazin’s legs appear to be gone now and midway through the round, Bunema lands a vicious combinations that ends with a booming right hand to the chin of Karmazin that results in him crashing to the canvas and through bottom rope and it’s over!! The referee doesn’t even bother to count Karmazin out and believe me, he doesn’t need to. Wow..what a knockout from Bunema. Karmazin is hurt and remains slumped over the corner for a few minutes. Geeze!
This may be the end for Roman who at age 36 has just been destroyed in the 10th.
(Next up is thWinner by 10th round TKO: Alex Bunema
(Next up, the “Foul Pole” Andrew Golota…this should be quite interesting. My guess is he either knocks his opponent out, or gets mad about something and self destructs)
——————————————–
Andrew Golota (40-6, 33 KOs) vs. Mike Mollo (19-1, 12 KOs)
(WBA Fedalatin heavyweight title) [What the hell is that??]
12-rounds
(Golota’s wearing a face like he’s going to murder Mollo)
Round 1: Mollo comes out doing his best Peter McNeely impression by rushing golota and throwing non-stop bodyshots which Golota barely aknowledges. Golota looks cold and dry so Mollo takes advantage by outpunching him. Andrew lands a few hard left hooks that creates a bloody welt on Mollo’s forehead but Mollo easily wins the first. Golota is still growling in the corner between rounds; this guy should be in a cartoon.
10-9 Mollo
Round 2: A hotly contested round-2 starts off with Mollo stunning Golota with a right hand that drives him back. Golota who clearly didn’t like getting hit like that acomes back with some combos of his own. Mollo is hurt twice before the end of the round and has to hang on for dear life. A tornado has sprouted and its name is Golota.
19-19 Even
Round 3: Golota has another successful round with hard right hands. Mollo is getting frustrated already that he can’t get to Golota on the inside. As the round closes, Mollo lands a jab about two or three seconds after the bell out of despiration. Golota is not pleased.
29-28 Golota
Round 4: The round begins with Golota landing another hard right hand but Mollo finally has enough as he catches Golota with a right hand of his own that stuns him and forces him to hold. Mollo follows it up with a one-two combo and a left hook to the body, then backs ups and lands another crushing right hand that stuns Golota again. Where did this offense come from for Mollo and will it continue into the 5th? Golota was most DEFINITELY not pleased with that round. Mollo easily wins this one.
38-38 Even
Round 5: Mollo fresh off a solid round 4 comes out strong with newfound confidence. He bullies Golota around and digs his head into Golota’s chest to back him up. Hooks and right hands continue to fly from Mollo and Golota suddenly has no offense. A massive mouse forms under Golota’s left eye after Mollo ducks a hook and bombs the Pole with a right cross that’s right on the money. Mollo wins another round.
48-47 Mollo
Round 6: This round looks like the previous one as Mollo is exuding a ton of confidence. He actually starts to taunt Golota and screams out obscenities after throwing a combo. Kinda funny for a guy that was nearly knocked down twice a few rounds ago. No signs yet of low blows from Andrew Golota! More body shots from Molla that have slowed Golota down.
58-56 Mollo
Round 7: Mollo is content to work to the body and only to the body rarely even throwing a punch upstairs. Golota looks to do something about it and works Mollo’s head. Midway through the round, Golota lands a looping right hand to the ear of Mollo that he didn’t seem to like. Mollo loudly complains to the ref like a school kid who just got slapped while he wasn’t paying attention. Hey Mollo, it’s a boxing match. You WILL get hit. Better round for Golota that tightens up the scorecard.
67-66 Mollo
(Golota’s left eye is swelling pretty badly. Mollo should throw more right hands).
Round 8: Golota has gotten back on his horse and bombards Mollo with hooks and body shots. Mollo looks like he’s getting tired now and is fighting in more of a crouching stance working the body. Golota looks back on track.
76-76 Even
Round 9: Golota and Mollo put on some fireworks as they go toe-to-toe for the entire round. Golota has Mollo hurt on a few occasions which is aided by his increasing fatigue. Golota’s eye is completely shut now but luckily for him he has Mollo so exhausted that he’s in control. Golota should try and end this one soon so the eye won’t come into play. They end the round in a furious exchange and the crowd eats it up. Beat fight of the night so far! Golota takes it here.
86-85 Golota
Round 10: What a great round here! Both guys have thrown any kind of tactics out the window and are just swinging away. Golota takes the round as Mollo is nearly dropped on various occasions through fatigue and left hooks from Golota. Golota wins another round and he’s now on a roll. Mollo might not make it to the 12th round; he’s so tired and Golota’s punches aren’t helping his cause.
96-94 Golota
(In between rounds, Golota’s eye is looked at by the doctor. Surprisingly he lets him continue as Golota isn’t able to tell him how many fingers he’s holding up. I thought for a second was going to tell his corner: “Cut me Mick..or whatever his trainer’s name is)
Round 11: Mollo should stay in the corner when the bell rings for the 12th. He’s so exhausted it’s making ME tired. Golota wins the round based off higher activity and the fact that he’s not cowering over his opponent’s waist.
106-103 Golota
Round 12: Geeze. That’s all I can say. Golota was trying desperately for the knockout but Mollo locks in like a crab. Mollo looks like he’s ready to go for the last minute and a half but Golota, also exhausted can’t put the finishing touches and even lands two low blows to close the show. Classic Golota but kudos for trying.
My final score: 116-112 for Golota
(I don’t want to see Mollo on PPV ever again; make that television in general. This guy should be fighting 6-round fights. Either that or he needs a new conditioning coach, stat!)
8:44 PM: We now await the official decision.
The official scores are 116-110, 116-112, 118-109 all for the winner by unanimous decision: Andrew Golota!
Golota is pleased with the decision and even cracks a smile. Well a smile by Golota standards.
Overall, it was a pretty exciting fight though. Good stuff.
8:50 PM: It’s main event time now folks. Both guys are in their respective locker rooms as they wait for the ring to get cleared out and a change in the officials. We now get a video package showing some of the highlights of their careers.
8:51 PM: Roy Jones is now making his way to the ring wearing a blinged out crown. I guess that means he’s the king tonight or something. Unfortunately his gloves don’t match his outfit…damn Trinidad lol.
8:53 PM: Trinidad comes out next with a slow song that makes me want to cry. No but seriously, that doesn’t pump me up and even the Puerto Rican fans seem like they don’t appreciate the music selection. Trinidad is wearing a nice outfit.
Michael Buffer now jumps on the mic and introduces the national anthems. Time for a trip to the kitchen!
For the record, both national anthems were sung so piss-poorly that the crowd booed the U.S. national anthem. Send that guy from High School Musical back to school, please.
9:02 PM: “LLLLLLLLET’S GET RRRREADY TO RUMBLLLLLLLLLLE” - Michael Buffer
Let’s get it on folks!
Roy Jones (51-4, 38 KOs) vs. Felix Trinidad (42-2, 35 KOs)
(light heavyweight fight)
12-rounds
Round 1: The first minute of the round not many punches were throw as both fighters circle the ring looking for an opening. Trinidad finally opens up with solid left jabs that push Jones back and mixes in a few left hooks. With under a minute to go Jones decides to throw back and lets out a lightning quick combination that lands flush and both guys start to mix it up. Trinidad goes to the body and wins the round.
10-9 Trinidad
Round 2: Another round in which Jones begins a little too tentatively. Trinidad takes advantage by going to the body and adding hooks to the head. Trinidad looks very comfortable for a guy who’s been out of the ring for a couple of years. Jones looks irritated by Trinidad’s success to the body so he starts to trade with Trinidad to end the round. Good action in the second half of both rounds. Trinidad closes the round landing a perfectly timed right. Trinidad wins this one too but Jones is starting to let his hands go now. Close round.
20-18 Trinidad
Round 3: They trade again in the 3rd and Trinidad goes to the body like he’s looking for a knockout. He goes low on a few occasions but isn’t warned like he was in the 2nd. Jones is trapped along the ropes as Trinidad bombards him with body punches. Jones taunts him and invites him to trade with hiim. Jones lands some counter punches to the head that punctuates the round. The fight is starting to get hot. These guys are going to really put on a show in the next couple of rounds. Trinidad still wins this one with a higher punch output.
30-27 Trinidad
Round 4: Jones begins the round by letting Trinidad come forward. Tito continues to dig to the body with left hooks. Jones shakes them off but he should be weary of taking too many of those. Jones finds a home with lead right hands that are landing frequently and flush. Roy looks like he’s having fun in there and he has his best round of the fight. Jones wins this one.
39-37 Trinidad
Round 5: Tito lands another low blow and Jones is given a minute to recover. Jones takes about 20 seconds to snarl then does his best Ravishing Rick Rude impersination with his hips and goes after Trinidad. Trindad is now the one backing up as Jones lands more right hands to the chin. Solid action in the closing minute. As the rounds go forward, they are both starting to trade a little more often. Good fight. Jones wins this one too.
48-47 Trinidad
Round 6: Roy Jones seems to have lost respect for Trinidad’s power as he continues moving forward while daring Trinidad to hit him back. Jones is beginning to have success with the left and we see his trade mark double left hook to the head on a few occasions. Jones completely dominated this round and caught Felix off balance three times. Jones looks great in this round as he momentarily stuns Trinidad with 15 seconds left in the round.
57-57 Even
Round 7: They box each other for the first half of the round. Jones is starting to land the harder blows now. with a minute and a half to go, Jones lands a vicious right hand. Tito reacts a little late and DOWN GOES TRINIDAD!!!. Tito takes a knee, clearly hurt by that shot to the temple but beats the count. Trinidad is up and backs up for the remainder of the round but is still trading with Jones. Trinidad looks in trouble here. Jones is very confident now and is in complete control. Wow!
67-65 Jones
Round 8: Trinidad surprisingly comes out at the start of this round as the aggressor but as the round wears on, it’s Jones who is walking him down. Trinidad is trying to land his big left hooks as he fires off combinations that are being blocked by Jones. Roy is starting to pick him apart and I’m not sure Trinidiad can hurt Jones right now. Jones edges Trinidad in this one.
77-74 Jones
Round 9: No one can say that Trinidad isn’t trying here but it’s starting to resemble his fight against Winky Wright. Trinidad is throwing everything in his arsenal but aside from the left hook to the body, Jones is blocking them all with a high guard. Jones is smiling in there and enjoying himself. He’s also throwing one punch at a tiem now but he’s landing and conserving his energy. On three occasions, Jones lands viscious left uppercuts that snap Trinidad’s head back. Jones won this one.
87-83 Jones
Round 10: You almost get the feeling that Jones could close the show if he tried hard enough. Jones is landing at will when he throws straight punches and Trinidad keeps throwing hooks that land on the forearms of Jones. With under a minute to go, Jones lands a one-two combo and DOWN GOES TRINIDAD again! Trinidad had slipped after getting hit with the jab and the right hand mostly grazed his forehead but a knockdown nonetheless. Jones punctuates the round with a barrage of punches that puts the NYC crowd on their feet. Trinidad needs a knockout now.
97-91 Jones
Round 11: This round is a little slower compared to the last couple of rounds but Jones is still in complete control. Trinidad’s ring rust is quite apparent now as he seems unsure of what else he could do to win this fight. Jones has the kind of confidence flowing through him right now that I haevn’t seen since he fought John Ruiz in 2003. Jones still wins the round with perfectly timed right hands. Let’s see if Jones goes for the Ko as he guaranteed during the press tour.
107-100 Jones
Round 12: “Ya’ll must ‘of forgot” - Remember those words from Jones a few years back? Well I guess we did forget that he still has the skills to compete at a high level. Round 12 was all Jones and although he didn’t go for the knockout, he pushed Trinidad back with snapping right hands and mixed in a few uppercuts to seal the deal. Trinidad had no answers for Jones in the final stanza.
My final score: 117-109 for Roy Jones.
We now wait for the official scores.
The scores are 116-110, 117-109, 116-110 all for the winner by unanimous decision: Roy Jones Jr.!!
9:57 PM: Stay tuned for the post-fight interview….
Roy Jones says that his training camp was tough but he had fun. He says when he’s having fun, he can’t be stopped; he says he ’s “Mr. Unstoppable”. He calls out Hopkins and Calzaghe and says he’s willing to fly to Wales to take on Joe Calzaghe.
Felix Trinidad gives props to Roy Jones and says that he was much quicker than he expected. Trinidad concedes that he lost the fight but not by such a wide margin. He says that he’ll sit back and talk it over with his father and camp and they’ll decide at a later time on what he’ll do next.
Quote of the night from Roy Jones in his locker room. (He was asked about having to switch from Grant gloves to Everlast): “It don’t matter to me, I’ll give him an Everlast ass whoopin.” Ha ha…good stuff!
