Night of the comet, catherine mary stewart, route 666, resident evil, youtubetc, viaggiavventurenelmondo | Link Me (New)
Night of the Comet is a fairly light-hearted film, which is a rarity in the zombie/apocalypse horror genre. The film focuses on two Valley Girl-like sisters named Regina (“Reg”) and Samantha, who are two of the perhaps dozen or so people left in Southern California and presumably the country and world after a rare comet collides with Earth. Everyone who was outside for comet parties or otherwise during the collision have been turned into piles of dirt or zombies. Reg, who works in a movie theater, spent the night in the projectionist’s booth having sex with Larry the projectionist, who lent a film print out for the night to a friend and is waiting for the print to be returned. Samantha had a fight with their stepmother Doris and spent the night in a gardening store. Larry is immediately attacked by a zombie as soon as he goes out the next morning looking for the dude he lent the film prints to. Reg waits around, pre-occupied with getting yet another high score on the video game in the theater’s lobby, but then later locks herself out of the theater when going to check on where Larry or anyone else is. She tries to go through the side entrance and finds Larry’s keys. She is then attacked by the same zombie that got Larry. But both Reg and Samantha have a father in the army, and they grew up on bases and were taught how to fight and shoot guns, so Reg is able to fight off the zombie, take Larry’s motorcycle, and go back home, where she finds her sister getting ready for pep squad practice although she can’t get any other members of the squad on the phone. Since songs are still being broadcast on the radio, they decide to head to the radio station, where they encounter Hector, a truck driver who survived by shacking up with a strange woman during the night in his truck. The woman asked to be let off later in the night, and while he drove around looking for her, he found her 20 minutes later looking zombie-ish. They wait it out a night or two at the radio station, and Samantha emits a goofy broadcast that some scientists are listening to in the desert, kind of upset that it’s Valley Girls who have survived. Hector insists that he has to go back down to San Diego to see if his mother and sister survived. The girls wait around for awhile, shoot up a car with uzis for target practice, and then decide to go clothes shopping to cheer themselves up. There, they are attacked by former stock boys. And then the scientists finally show up, whom with the exception of Mary Woronov’s character, not exactly good guys themselves.
I quite liked Night of the Comet, mostly because the relationship between Reg and Samantha are similar to that of my sister and me. My sister tends to live in her own little world like Samantha does, and I’m generally the responsible one. There aren’t a lot of scary parts in this movie, and the jokes are hit-or-miss, but it’s an enjoyable film. What’s interesting is how alien they made Los Angeles look after the comet hit. The sky is really red and it reflects off the buildings really strangely. Sometimes that effect looked like bad computer animation, similar to the building outline effects in Escape from New York (which if I remember correctly, wasn’t animated, but still), other times it looked completely natural.
Now that both the films from Grindhouse have been released separately on DVD recently here in America (and I think released theatrically separately in the UK), there has been discussion of how Robert Rodriguez, being younger than Quentin Tarantino, was possibly more influenced by the 1980s VHS revolution rather than 1970s grindhouse films, and how that reflects in Planet Terror, his longer portion of Grindhouse (Rodriguez also directed the preview for Machete). While not as extreme or out-there as Planet Terror, it’s a possibility that Night of the Comet was one of the many 1980s horror films that influenced it. It shares similar elements and a similar spirit.

Edna gladney, Television movies for the week
January 20, 2008 – 11:04 am
Edna Browning Kahly Gladney (b. 1886, Milwaukee, Wisconsin – d. 1961, Texas) was an early campaigner for children’s rights and better living conditions for disadvantaged children.
When Edna Kahly’s father, Maurice Kahly, died in 1903, her mother sent young Edna to live with her aunt and uncle in Fort Worth, Texas. Edna and Sam Gladney married in 1906 and moved to Wolfe City, Texas where she began a crusade to clean up a Grayson County poor farm.
After seeing the horrible treatment of the children there, she arranged for them to be transferred to Morris’ Children’s Hospital and Aid Society in Fort Worth. She joined the board of directors for the Society and started a free day care facility in Sherman, Texas that was self-financed.
In 1924, Gladney and her husband moved back to Fort Worth, where Edna became superintendent of the Society in 1927. Gladney successfully lobbied the Texas legislature to take the word “illegitimate” off birth certificates and to ensure adopted children the same inheritance rights of other children.
After the Society acquired the West Texas Maternity Hospital in 1950, the Society’s members renamed it the Edna Gladney Home (now known as the Gladney Center for Adoption).
Texas Christian University gave Gladney an honorary doctor of laws degree in 1957. Though she fell ill in 1960, Gladney continued to help with plans for the Home until her death in 1961.
Legacy
A film based on her life and charitable efforts, Blossoms in the Dust, was released in 1941, and starred Oscar-winning actress Greer Garson as Gladney.
